From Blade Runner: What *is* this anyway?
Blade Runner is my all-time favorite movie. (In fact, it's about time to watch it again.) Roy Batty nails the interesting philosophical problem in his rooftop monologue, and I like the way the movie is built out from that point.
This is one of the scorched sky dystopian movies, where the sun is totally obscured by rolling, black clouds. Also, it was made in the 1980's, as Japan was becoming a truly dominant force in the business world. One scene of the movie is set in what I can only describe as a cross between the physical feeling of Times Square in Manhattan, and the visual and auditory stimulation of a downtown Tokyo that I imagine--lots of ads, lots of neon, lots of lights, big in-your-face images, and such. (Times Square has those now, too, but it was a lot more subdued in the 80's.)
I captured a frame from this setting and use it as my computer's desktop background every so often, one of about a dozen images I cycle through. After years of seeing it on-and-off, just in the past week I noticed an odd little piece of the image that has since captured my imagination. No way to know what it's supposed to be, but I wonder what comes to your mind? See it at right, above, then let me know what you think.
