Monday
Lots of good progress.
6 out of the 10 dahlias have or are breaking ground.
A Sweet Pea has emerged. I'm surprised that such a thin stalk found its way to the surface through two inches (5 cm) of soil.
Another Nasturtium or two have sprung up. I'll have to thin them after all.
A sunflower inexplicably sent a root upward. I thought the leaves/cotyledons had broken off underground, but when I pulled it out, I saw what happened. I put it back in its hole right-side up, and maybe now it will grow properly. Or maybe I'll end up with a weird sunflower.
The lily bulb has sent up a shoot that's just poking through the surface now. I don't know if this will be much more than a sprig this year, I'll just have to wait and see what happens.
I must have seeded two zinnia together, because a second one popped up in the same place where one was already growing. I transplanted it somewhere else, and it's doing well so far. Only 5 of the 12 zinnia have emerged.
I'm still especially waiting for the gazania, which were one of my favorite flowers two years ago, and the [da da dum] Convolvulus, pictured right, which I hope to use for this year's hanging flower basket on the front porch. It will be satisfying having grown the flower basket myself instead of spending $40 on one.
